As electric vehicles become a more common sight on our roads, so does the specialized vocabulary that comes with them. Understanding these terms will make your EV charging experience smoother and more confident. Here's a guide to some of the most common terms you'll encounter:
Vehicle Types
- EV (Electric Vehicle): A general term for any vehicle that uses one or more electric motors for propulsion. This includes BEVs, PHEVs, and sometimes HEVs.
- BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle): An EV powered solely by electricity, drawing all its power from a rechargeable battery pack. It has no internal combustion engine and produces zero tailpipe emissions. (e.g., Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E).
- PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle): A hybrid vehicle with both an electric motor and a gasoline engine. It has a larger battery than a traditional hybrid that can be charged by plugging into an external power source, offering a significant electric-only range before the gasoline engine takes over. (e.g., Toyota RAV4 Prime, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid).
- HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle): A vehicle that combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a small battery. The battery is charged through regenerative braking and the engine, but the vehicle cannot be plugged in to charge. (e.g., Toyota Prius).
Power & Energy Measurement
- kW (Kilowatt): A unit of power, measuring the rate at which electricity is delivered or consumed. This indicates how fast your EV is charging. Higher kW means faster charging.
- kWh (Kilowatt-hour): A unit of energy, representing one kilowatt of power sustained for one hour. This measures the capacity of your EV's battery (like the size of your fuel tank) and the amount of electricity consumed during charging. For example, a 75 kWh battery can deliver 75 kilowatts of power for one hour (or 1 kilowatt for 75 hours).
- Voltage (V): The "pressure" of the electrical current. Higher voltage allows for faster charging.
- Amperage (A): The "volume" or strength of the electrical current.
Charging Levels & Speed
- Level 1 Charging (AC): The slowest type of EV charging, using a standard household 120V (North America) wall outlet. It typically adds 3-5 miles of range per hour. Often called a "trickle charger" or "granny charger."
- Level 2 Charging (AC): The most common type of charging for homes, workplaces, and public destinations. It uses a 240V power source and typically adds 20-30 miles of range per hour. It requires dedicated EV charging equipment (EVSE).
- DC Fast Charging (DCFC) / Level 3 Charging: The fastest type of charging, delivering Direct Current (DC) power directly to the EV's battery, bypassing the car's onboard converter. This is found at public stations (e.g., along highways) and can add hundreds of miles of range in under an hour, depending on the charger's power and the vehicle's capacity.
Charging Connectors (North America)
- J1772: The standard plug for Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging for all North American EVs (except native Tesla vehicles).
- CCS (Combined Charging System): The most common DC Fast Charging connector in North America (often called "Combo" plug). It combines the J1772 port with additional pins for DC power.
- CHAdeMO: Another common DC Fast Charging connector, primarily found on older Japanese EVs like the Nissan Leaf.
- NACS (North American Charging Standard) / Tesla Connector: Tesla's proprietary connector. While unique, adapters are widely available that allow Teslas to charge at J1772, CCS, and CHAdeMO stations, and many non-Tesla vehicles are beginning to adopt NACS.
Charging Process & Management
- Session / Charging Session / Transaction: These terms are often used interchangeably to refer to a single instance of charging your EV. A "session" or "charging session" describes the entire period from when you plug in and initiate charging to when you unplug and the charging stops. This often directly correlates with a "charging transaction," which is the record of that specific charging event, including the energy dispensed, duration, and cost. So, ending a session typically means ending the charging transaction.
- AC (Alternating Current): The type of electricity supplied to homes and the power grid. EVs convert AC to DC internally for battery storage during Level 1 and Level 2 charging.
- DC (Direct Current): The type of electricity stored in EV batteries. DC Fast Chargers convert AC from the grid to DC at the station before sending it directly to the EV's battery.
- Charging Port / Inlet: The receptacle on your electric vehicle where the charging cable is plugged in.
- Connector / Plug: The end of the charging cable that plugs into your EV's charging port.
- EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment): The formal term for the charging station or charger hardware itself.
- ID search: A term referring to entering the charger ID in mobile and web app's search field/bar to locate a specific charger to activate/start a charging transaction.
- Onboard Charger: The component inside your EV that converts AC power from Level 1 and Level 2 chargers into DC power that your battery can store. This component determines your vehicle's maximum AC charging rate.
- BMS (Battery Management System): The "brain" of your EV's battery. It monitors and manages the battery's health, temperature, charging, and discharging, and communicates with the charger to control the charging speed.
- State of Charge (SoC): The current charge level of your EV's battery, typically displayed as a percentage (like a fuel gauge).
- Charging Curve: A visual representation of how an EV's charging speed changes over time during a charging session. DC fast charging often "tapers" (slows down) as the battery approaches a full charge (e.g., past 80%) to protect battery health.
- Load Management: Systems used by charging stations to distribute available power efficiently, especially when multiple vehicles are charging simultaneously, to prevent overloading the electrical infrastructure.
- Smart Charging: Technology that optimizes EV charging by communicating with the grid, setting schedules, or responding to electricity prices to charge when it's most efficient or cheapest.
- V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid): Bi-directional charging technology that allows EVs to not only draw power from the grid but also send power back to the grid, potentially helping to stabilize it during peak demand.
- Idle Fee / Loitering Fee / Thereafter Fee: A charge applied by some charging networks if your vehicle remains plugged into a charger after its charging session is complete (or after a certain grace period). These fees are implemented to encourage drivers to move their vehicles promptly, ensuring chargers are available for the next user and optimizing station utilization.
- Authentication: The process of identifying and verifying a user (e.g., via an app, RFID card, or credit card) before allowing them to start a charging session.
